Seasons Greetings

Seasons Greetings

Have you noticed how tomatoes can pretty much taste of nothing at Xmas? & how strawberries in March are small & watery?

Although you can pretty much get anything throughout the year, there's definitely a distinction between sweet tasting, in season fruits & vegetables & force grown watery selections.

Follow our quick guide to what's in season this August & September, & you know what to look for when you're next trawling the shelves...

August

- runner beans
- aubergines
- brocolli
- tomatoes
- peppers
- cucumber
- fennel
- radish
- sweetcorn
- watercress
- plums
- apples
- blackberries

In August, you'll find that vegetables & fruit that need a lot of sun come into season. Obviously anything you've gallantly tried to grow at home will be suffering with all this rain, but shop bought stock will be really tasty by now.

Think Greek salads, with cucumber & tomato, broad bean salads, roast lamb & feta, wild berry smoothies, chargrilled aubergine with feta & basil & apple tart...

September

- curly kale cabbage
- chillies
- pumpkins
- rocket
- pears
- greengages
- beans
- cabbage
- cauliflower
& most of last month's list

Autumnal seasons see the last of the summer crops, think rocket & parmesan salad, mussels with cream & chive sauce, pumpkin fritters, light roasts with buttered kale & parmesan swede...

That's it, we need some lunch, all this talking about food. If you need any recipe tips, or feel like getting some expert help on a cookery problem, simply comment in the box below...

See you soon Busy Cooks!
