Eye eye!
MAC have gone all neon & right now every other makeup brand worth its salt is following quickly behind. So how do you stop yourself from looking like you've just stepped out of Star Trek & slapped yourself in the face with a pot of Dulux?
The Busy Girls come to the rescue - here's our Expert Makeup Artist's top tips on slapping on some shadow without scaring the kids...
Why eye?
Eyeshadows add real depth to our eyes & the right application can make them look smaller, bigger, set closer together or further apart. All you need is to choose the right colour & shade & know how to apply it perfectly.
Where do I start?
Ok, unless you're closely related to Barbie, the top ten brightest eye shadows are going to make you look like you've raided the gloss paint selection at B&Q. The first thing to do, is get real & start looking for shades of colour that really complement your look.
Start with a neutral base colour. If you have warm skin then choose a apricot / orange toned base. if you are cool skinned then you should look for a cool cream base or something with a touch of pink.
Simply sweep the pale base from the inner corner of the eye to outside & upward to brow bone with a small soft brush.
Then you'll need to pick a darker colour to highlight the eye shape. If you're going for a dramatic look, then the darker the better, however for day time try to stick to a mid-depth colour.
Colour Confidence
Choosing the right eyeshadow colour really is simple - just follow your eye colour...
Blue Eyes
Taupe, gray, violet, purple & deep blue colours go well with blue eyes while black mixed with bright blue helps to create smoky eyes.
For bold funky looks, you can choose silver, turquoise & fuchsia shades.
Green & Hazel Eyes
Brown, apricot, purple, plum & forest green colours brighten up green & hazel eyes while you can add a touch of bold sophistication by experimenting with gold, lime-green, very light green & bright purple shades.
Brown Eyes
Copper, bronze, champagne, beige & forest-green look gorgeous on brown eyes while brown eyeshadow helps to create a doe-eyed look. Colours like tangerine, royal blue, hot pink & lime-green add a punch to the personality.
No eye-d-ea
Don't worry, there are a stack of failsafe colours that can be used for all eyes - try navy or charcoal based shades & powder-blue eyeshadow for achieving highlighting effects.
Finally, try these top quick tips for a little extra know-how...
1. If you choose a pearly eyeshadow use a sponge applicator to avoid flaking.
2. A shading brush (soft & wide) is of great help when it comes to blending in eyeshadows.
3. Liquid eyeshadows can easily double up as a highlighter for face, body & eyes. They also serve as the base to help other eyeshadows set & give them depth.
4. Whatever you do, don't draw eyeliner pencils across the eyelid as you can actually stretch the skin! Either use a liquid pen, or apply a pencil using your fingertip so it blends in well.
