1. Do you like the culture & environment?

The culture of the firm can have a dramatic effect on your overall happiness and success. Do the company's values sit well with your own? If you find yourself at odds with the way the environment and culture of the firm work, perhaps it's time to move on.

2. Do you dread going to work?

When you wake up in the morning, do you dread leaving going into work? Although we don't expect you to be jumping up & down with excitement at the prospect of work, a total lack of interest or a gut wrenching desire not to turn in, tells you all you need to know.

3. How do you get on with the boss?

Problems with the boss is the most common reason that professionals give for leaving jobs - you simply need to be able to work with your boss to get on. You'll know better than anyone which management styles suit you the best and will know what synergies are absent from your relationship. Is there any chance of having a different boss? Moving departments perhaps?

Are you able to speak to your boss about how you feel, or to work on a new way of communicating? If you've exhausted the possibilites & still get nowhere then it may be time to move on.

4. Do you enjoy your day to day work?

Ok, so no job is fun & games every day, but you should find some sort of enjoyment each day. Your regular daily tasks should work with your strengths & reflect things that you like to do and do well.

e.g. If you love meeting new people and being out & about, you'll probably have a problem working on spreadsheets & accounts every day in the same office.

5. Can you see a future for your career in this role?

Does your company place an importance on training & role development? Can you see yourself moving up the ladder in this role, should you want to? If you have tried to discuss your future at the company but don't feel happy with the response you have been given, then the potential to succeed may not be there.

Ok, so let's assume that you've answered no to the majority of the questions above. Well, don't jump ship too soon Busy Girl, make sure you use your initiative to see if there is anything you can do to change the situation, or anyone you can speak to, in order to help you improve your position.

Proactively seek out opportunities by talking to your boss or HR Manager about how you can advance. If you feel you haven't been progressed quickly enough, assess whether you have made the right level of effort.

Simply ask yourself, "have I done everything I can to advance my career here?" - if the answer's yes and you still feel dissatisfied, then they job is probably just not for you.

Time to hunt for something more suitable - we wish you the very best of luck!
