How to: Detox your wardrobe in 2 hours
Fashion & Style
With the miserable weather in the UK at the moment, you'd be forgiven for wearing the same old jumper, jeans and boots all week. But, if you're anything like me...
... that may be more to do with not being able to get into the wardrobe than anything else.
I have this terribly annoying habit of tidying the wardrobe (sort of) and then for the next week throwing everything I take off onto the floor, thus having to start my clearing mission again the following week.
So, BusyGirl, if like me you need a good old clear out and don't know where to start, here are some top tips for Wardrobe Detoxing fast:
1. Get two black bags open in front of the wardrobe. One is called ‘bin' and the other ‘charity'
2. Remove your clothes from the (floor) wardrobe, one by one. As you take a piece out, ask yourself:
- When did you last wear this item?
- Is it a winter or a summer piece?
Be honest - if you haven't worn the piece of clothing for the last 2 years then you can decide whether it is in good enough condition to give to charity, if so - into the ‘charity' bag it goes. If not - ‘bin it!'
The fact is, if you've not worn it for 2 years, you're unlikely to ever wear it again, and it's just taking up space in your wardrobe and cluttering your mind!
3. If you have worn the piece recently, but it's a summer item, put it on one side of the room. If it's a current ‘winter' item, then place it on the other side.
4. Once you've done this with all your clothes, you should have a full charity bag, a full bin bag and two piles of clothes to go back into your wardrobe.
5. If you have enough room in your wardrobe for both piles, then start hanging the winter clothes first. Use the most accessible rail in the wardrobe and add your casual clothes first - jeans first, then trousers, then dresses, then skirts next to them, then your tops and finally jackets. Then start with your ‘work' or ‘smart' clothes, adding them in the same order.
6. If you have jumpers and other ‘drawer' items, add the winter pieces to the top (most accessible) drawers.
7. Then it's on to your summer stuff. I normally bag this up and then bring it out in May, but if you have room in your wardrobe you can add your summer clothes in the same category order as you did your winter stuff.
8. This time add the summer clothes to the lower drawers - you won't need them for months!
9. Some stylists will organise pieces into colour order too, but this may take a bit too long, so as you're busy I recommend ‘casual' vs. ‘work' filing to be the best time-saver.
10. Et voila! Now you have a wardrobe packed full of clothes you'll actually wear, in the perfect, logical order to be able to easily select them each morning.
Time saving at its best x
