As winter draws in, we fancied a cosy weekend away in the crispy air of the Lake District, so sent our Busy Travel Expert Rowena Forbes to review the four-star Armanthwaite Hall Hotel in Keswick to bring you the essential details...




Location

A splendid, well-restored, stately country home, set in 400 acres of peaceful park & woodland, overlooking the tranquil Bassenthwaite Lake in the north of the Lake District.

Standard & deluxe rooms & studio suites; grand wood-panelled rooms; real log fires; leisure club with indoor pool, sauna, steam room & gymnasium; holistic beauty salon; snooker room; croquet lawn; tennis courts & a pitch & putt course.




Activities out & about

Quad bike safaris, clay pigeon shooting, off-road driving & mountain biking is all available within the grounds. There are also fishing & golf facilities nearby.




Animal antics

Trotter's World of Animals is located in the hotel grounds, just a couple of minutes' walk from the main building. Gibbons, lemurs, meercats, otters, birds of prey, zebras, reptiles, guinea pigs & many more exotic & domestic creatures can be spotted here.




Kids club

The 'FreeBee Club' offers various activities to keep your little ones happy, including free entry to Trotter's World of Animals, sports & baby-sitting facilities.

Special children's programmes run on weekends & through school holidays, including treasure hunts, nature walks, high teas & the ever-popular cooking with chocolate.




Dogs allowed

Can't bear to leave the family pet at home? Cushioned beds & a welcome pack are available for your dog, with meals available at extra cost. Just keep your pup out of the public rooms & on a lead in the immediate grounds.




Dining in

Enjoy traditional afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones, jams & clotted cream, cakes & biscuits, plus a selection of leaf teas, in the Lake Room.

Busy festive tip

Christmas at Armathwaite Hall 2007 includes black tie festive dinners, Christmas carols on the piano, a visit from Father Christmas, a candlelit walk around the grounds, magicians and games for the kids, medieval evening, casino night & a bucks fizz breakfast.




How much?

Prices start from £130 for single occupancy, & from 1£05 per person for two or more per room, including bed & full English breakfast. Up to two children under 12, sharing with two adults, can stay for free, including breakfast.

Special prices for short breaks, seasonal stays & other packages are available.
